MSLA - Maps of Sea Level Anomalies & geostrophic velocity anomalies

Types of dataset: Ssalto/Duacs multimission altimeter products.
Contents: multimission gridded sea surface heights computed with respect to a twenty-year mean
Use: Ssalto/Duacs gridded products are devoted to scientific applications and non-commercial use: study of ocean variability (mesoscale circulation, seasonal variation, El Niño...), including operational oceanography (near-real time products). The Global Mean Sea Level rise is computed by using an adapted processing and corrections which are not applied to the multimission Ssalto/Duacs products (see the dedicated page of the MSL).

Data access service: see Data access service. In NRT, FTP delivers the most recent data (day-0) whereas Opendap/Gridded Data Extraction Tool/LAS only deliver data more than one month.
Description: gridded product, provided in near-real time and in delayed time. As a snapshot, each map represents the sea state for a given day. One spatial resolution is available: 1/4°x1/4° on a cartesian grid. 
The formal mapping error variable is available in the MSLA/h files. Geostrophic velocity anomalies are delivered in a specific file.
Geographic coverage: global
A specific regional product with an improved quality is available in local areas (more information).

Tools:

New reference period: In the Duacs 2014 version (v15.0), the reference period of the Sea Level Anomalies is based on a 20-year [1993, 2012] period whereas in the former version it was on a 7-year [1993, 1999] period.

To allow the users to ensure this consistency between the (M)SLA and MDT products, new "ref20yto7y" products are added to the catalogue. They consist of corrective maps that allow the user to change the reference period of the (M)SLA and MDT products from 20 years to 7 years. Depending on your application, you may wish to use this improved 20-year reference or you may wish to keep the original 7-year reference period. Further information: How to manage the change?

DT-MSLA

Description: this delayed time product is available in two versions:

  • "two sat merged" serie: this dataset is based on only two missions at most: Jason-2/AltiKa or Jason-2/Cryosat-2 or Jason-2 / Envisat  or Jason-1 / Envisat or Topex/Poseidon / ERS, with the same groundtrack. Thus it is homogeneous all along the available time period thanks to a stable sampling, but might not be the best in quality at a given time. The use of the "two sat merged" serie is mainly for application in need of great stability (but it must be kept in mind that the data might not be of the best possible quality). This serie corresponded to "Ref" serie before April 2014.
  • "all sat merged" serie: up-to-date datasets with up to four satellites at a given time, using all missions available at a given time. Sampling and Long Wavelength Errors determination are improved, so this serie is better in quality but not homogeneous over the time period. This serie corresponded to "Upd" serie before April 2014.

When only two satellites are available at a given time, the "two-sat-merged" and "all-sat-merged" files have the same content (files are duplicated).

The informations about the satellites taken into account are given in a new global attributes in the NetCDF file description (named "platform") and in the section "Temporal availability" of "Delayed-time Products" in the handbook

Customizable homepage

The new home page is composed of blocks called "widgets".

Rearrange the blocks with a "Click & Drop".

Hide a widget with the cross at the top right. Reset or add a widget with the "wrench" icon. The "User" and "Public" profiles offer a predefined organization.

All the modifications are automatically saved as cookies on your machine so as to enable you to have your own specific AVISO+.

Reading tools

Ease your reading by choosing the page background colour (black/white) and/or by modifying the font size.

Browsing menu and breadcrum trail

To ease your browsing through AVISO+, you can use at any time the main banner items with the interactive submenus or use the browsing menu on the left side of the screen (it is open by default). For more readiness of the page contents, you can fold and unfold the browsing menu by clicking on the tab. At any time you can know where you are thanks to the browsing menu or the breadcrum at the top of the page.

Products search guide

The first submenu of the "Data" banner item leads you to a new search form enabling you to find quickier the product that suits your needs. The list of results is updated according to your selection criteria.

AVISO+ Multimedia

The first submenu of the "Multimedia" banner item leads you to AVISO+ collections of images and videos linked to altimetry and its applications. Have a nice visit!
